Chapter Nine
My parents' friends and my girlfriends were the first guests to arrive. The patio around the pool was set up beautifully, as always. Momma had done the tables with big bowls of apples and fall colors even though pretty much all the leaves on the trees were still green. It was fall elsewhere, but autumn hadn't quite put its half-hearted effort into the Low Country yet.
The breeze did pick up a tad and it was mercifully dry. The mosquitoes hadn't been awful that summer but there were citronella tiki torches at the ready just in case.
The pig pit had been delivered the day before and Daddy was supervising two of my cousins who had volunteered to get up with my father in the wee small hours to start the big hog cooking so it would be perfectly falling apart by five in the afternoon. The odor of roast pig is the ideal smell for a party. It puts a smile on everyone's face.
Leann, Whit and I were hanging around in the kitchen watching our parents stand around the bar munching on cheese straws and and mixed nuts. Most everyone was drinking beer, including me and my girlfriends. A few of the moms had a glass of pink zinfandel and some of the men were having hard liquor on the rocks.
It was all very civilized. A pig pickin' is a family social affair. None of my friends were going to get drunk and sloppy. After the food and a little co-generational dancing, we'd break off into groups. The parents would convene in the house. The kids would go down to the river and hang around the boathouse and the little dock.
My parents were close and around enough so that Lonnie didn't paw at me like he usually did at a party. Lonnie seemed to think that the more PDA he performed, the more the world would think we were doing each other. Or something like that.
The pig started getting torn apart around six. There were hours of light left so everybody picnicked at their leisure, grazing the long line of side dishes and grabbing a hunk of pork when the mood struck. A bunch of us had taken our plates to the back porch and occupied the big table there. Some of the boys had spilled over onto the steps and were cracking each other up between bites. High school humor, always hilarious.
I watched them and wondered if these boys would suddenly mature when they left the cocoon of their buddy system for the greater world. I figured some would and some wouldn't. I knew enough about frat life to recognize it as just an extension of the cliquey crap I was watching on the steps. That was reason enough to stay away from it. Lonnie had already mapped out his rush week strategy for Clemson. He was perfect for the Greek life.
Lonnie had been surprised by my decision to go to Chapel Hill and even more surprised that I intended to just melt into the student body like I was nobody.
